What air filtration actually involves
Most homes run a one-inch filter in a slot that was designed around a cheap fibreglass panel. Swapping in a high-MERV pleated filter of the same thickness can raise static pressure past what the blower was designed for, which starves airflow, freezes coils in summer and trips high limits in winter. A four- or five-inch media cabinet solves this properly: more surface area, better filtration, lower resistance, and a filter you change annually instead of monthly.

- Registers deliver noticeably weak airflow
- The coil ices up in summer or the furnace trips on limit in winter
- Visible dust discharge from the supply vents

It depends on your system's static pressure, which we can measure. MERV 8–11 is safe for most one-inch slots. Anything higher generally needs a deeper media cabinet to avoid choking airflow.
One-inch filters every 1–3 months; more often with pets or during construction. Four-inch media filters typically last 6–12 months.
