Why Is One Room Hotter Than the Others?

It's almost never the furnace. It's almost always distribution.

The bedroom over the garage. The finished attic. The addition on the back. Nearly every Chicagoland home has one room that fights the thermostat, and replacing the equipment almost never fixes it.

The thermostat only knows one room

Your thermostat measures the air where it hangs, usually a hallway on the main floor. When that spot is satisfied, the system stops — regardless of what’s happening two floors up. Everything below is about why the other rooms don’t keep pace.

Return air is usually the culprit

Supply air has to go somewhere. If a bedroom has a supply register but no return path, closing the door pressurises the room and chokes off the incoming air. This is the single most common cause we find, and the fix is often as simple as a transfer grille, a jumper duct, or undercutting the door.

Duct length and the last room on the run

In mid-century ranches through Downers Grove and Arlington Heights, the bedroom wing sits at the end of a long trunk line. By the time air gets there it has lost velocity and temperature to everything upstream. Damper balancing can redistribute it; sometimes the run genuinely needs resizing.

The building envelope

Rooms over garages, above porches, or under an uninsulated roof lose heat far faster than the rest of the house. In Chicago’s bungalow belt the finished attic bedroom is the classic case: knee walls with minimal insulation, a roof deck absorbing sun all afternoon, and a single small duct doing all the work. No amount of equipment capacity fixes an insulation problem.

Stack effect in two- and three-storey homes

Warm air rises. In winter the top floor runs warm and the basement runs cold; in summer the top floor is unbearable. Larger historic homes in Oak Park and La Grange feel this acutely, which is why a dedicated zone or a mini-split for the upper floor usually beats upsizing the main system.

What we actually check

  • Static pressure on both sides of the air handler
  • Airflow at each register, measured rather than felt
  • Return path from every conditioned room
  • Damper positions and whether balancing dampers exist at all
  • Insulation and air sealing at the problem room
  • Whether the system was correctly sized in the first place

The fix is often cheap once the cause is known. It’s the diagnosis that has value.
