Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers on scheduling, pricing, repairs, replacement and more.

Whether you need an emergency repair, routine maintenance, or a completely new heating and cooling system, we want you to know what to expect. Find answers to some of the most common questions homeowners ask our HVAC team.

Scheduling & Service

United Seasons Heating & Air serves homeowners throughout Chicagoland and the surrounding suburbs. Contact our team to confirm service availability at your address.

Yes, same-day appointments are available when scheduling permits. If you're dealing with an urgent heating or cooling problem, calling us directly is the fastest way to check current availability.

Yes. We provide 24/7 emergency HVAC service for heating and cooling problems that can't wait until regular business hours.

Loss of heat during dangerously cold weather, cooling failures during extreme heat, burning or electrical odors, unusual smoke, suspected carbon monoxide issues, or equipment creating an immediate safety concern should be treated seriously. If you smell gas or suspect carbon monoxide, leave the home and contact the appropriate emergency or utility service before calling an HVAC contractor.

You can request service online or call our team directly at (708) 616-2804. Choose the option that's easiest for you, and we'll help arrange an appointment that works with your schedule.

Your technician will assess the system, identify the problem, explain what they found, and review recommended options with you. You'll know what work is being recommended and what it will cost before approved repairs begin.

Pricing & Estimates

We offer free in-home estimates for new HVAC system installations and replacements. We'll evaluate your home and comfort needs, discuss appropriate equipment options, and provide upfront pricing.

Yes. You'll receive pricing before approved work begins. Our goal is to eliminate surprises and make it clear what you're paying for.

Our job is to give you the information you need to make the right decision for your home. If repairing your existing equipment makes sense, we'll explain the repair. If replacement deserves consideration, we'll explain why and let you decide.

Yes. Flexible financing options are available to qualifying customers for eligible HVAC projects. Ask our team about current options when requesting an estimate.

Many HVAC symptoms can have several possible causes. An air conditioner that isn't cooling, for example, could have a relatively simple issue or a problem involving a major component. A proper diagnosis allows us to identify the actual cause and give you accurate options rather than guessing.

Air Conditioning

Possible causes include a dirty filter, thermostat issue, airflow restriction, frozen evaporator coil, refrigerant problem, electrical failure, or malfunctioning component. Because several problems can create similar symptoms, professional diagnosis is usually the best way to identify the cause.

Frequent cycling can be related to thermostat problems, restricted airflow, equipment sizing, dirty components, electrical issues, or other system problems. Repeated short cycling can increase wear and should be inspected.

Ice can form when the evaporator coil becomes too cold, often because of restricted airflow or a refrigerant-related issue. Continuing to operate a frozen system can make the problem worse, so turn the cooling off and have the system inspected.

Many residential air conditioners can operate for roughly 10–15 years or longer depending on installation quality, maintenance, operating conditions, usage, and equipment quality. Age alone doesn't determine whether replacement is necessary.

Annual cooling-system maintenance is a good general rule. A preseason inspection can identify developing problems, maintain proper operation, and help prepare the system for heavy summer use.

Heating & Furnaces

A furnace can blow cool air for several reasons, including thermostat settings, ignition problems, airflow issues, overheating, or component failures. If the problem continues after checking your thermostat and filter, schedule a professional inspection.

Repeated shutdowns can be caused by restricted airflow, overheating, thermostat problems, flame-sensing issues, or other mechanical or electrical problems. A technician can determine why the system isn't completing a normal heating cycle.

Annual professional maintenance, preferably before the heating season, is recommended for most residential systems.

Many furnaces operate for approximately 15–20 years, although actual lifespan varies considerably depending on the equipment, installation, maintenance, usage, and operating conditions.

Frequent repairs, rising operating costs, inconsistent temperatures, excessive noise, declining comfort, and advanced equipment age can all justify discussing replacement. That doesn't automatically mean a new furnace is necessary; the overall condition and economics of repairing the existing system should be considered.

Repair vs. Replacement

We consider equipment age, repair cost, overall condition, efficiency, comfort performance, previous repairs, and the likelihood of additional problems. There isn't one rule that applies to every system.

Not necessarily, but newer equipment can offer substantial efficiency improvements compared with many older systems. The condition and performance of your current equipment matter just as much as its age.

HVAC equipment shouldn't be selected based on square footage alone. Home size, insulation, windows, orientation, air leakage, ductwork, local climate, and other factors can affect heating and cooling requirements.

No. Oversized equipment can create comfort, humidity, efficiency, and cycling problems. The goal is properly sized equipment — not simply the largest system available.

Many straightforward residential replacements can be completed within a day, while more complicated installations may require additional time. We'll explain the expected installation schedule before work begins.

Maintenance & Efficiency

It depends on the filter, system, household, pets, indoor air conditions, and how frequently the equipment operates. Many common filters require attention every 1–3 months, but always follow the filter and equipment manufacturer's recommendations.

Yes. Routine maintenance can help identify developing problems, maintain proper airflow and operation, reduce unnecessary equipment stress, and help your system perform reliably throughout the season.

Regular maintenance, clean filters, sensible thermostat settings, properly sealed ductwork, adequate insulation, and efficient equipment can all contribute to lower HVAC energy consumption.

A smart thermostat can provide scheduling, remote control, energy-management features, and — in compatible systems — additional insight into your home's heating and cooling operation.

Yes. We install smart thermostat and climate-control solutions and can help determine which options are compatible with your HVAC system.

Yes. Our maintenance plans are designed to make seasonal HVAC care easier while helping customers keep their heating and cooling equipment properly maintained.

Indoor Air Quality

Yes. Depending on your home's needs, HVAC-based solutions can help with filtration, airborne particles, humidity, ventilation, and other indoor-air concerns.

Yes. We offer indoor air quality solutions including filtration and purification options. The appropriate solution depends on your home's HVAC system and the specific problem you're trying to address.

Duct cleaning can be appropriate in certain situations, particularly when there is significant debris or contamination within the duct system. It isn't automatically necessary for every home, so the ductwork should be evaluated before recommending it.

Excessive dust can have several sources, including filtration issues, air leakage, duct conditions, household activity, pets, and outdoor contaminants. An HVAC inspection can help determine whether your heating and cooling system is contributing to the problem.

Yes. Your cooling system naturally removes some moisture during operation, and dedicated humidity-control equipment can be used when additional control is necessary.

Your HVAC System

We service most major residential HVAC equipment brands. If you're unsure about your specific equipment, call us with the manufacturer and model information.

Rattling, grinding, squealing, buzzing, banging, and other unusual noises can indicate anything from a loose component to a mechanical or electrical problem. New or worsening sounds are worth investigating before a minor issue becomes a larger repair.

Uneven temperatures can result from airflow problems, ductwork, insulation, equipment sizing, thermostat location, home layout, air leakage, or system performance. The solution depends on identifying what's actually causing the imbalance.

Weather, utility rates, thermostat settings, longer equipment runtime, dirty filters, maintenance issues, duct leakage, and declining system performance can all affect energy use. A sudden unexplained increase can be a reason to have the system inspected.

SEER2 is an efficiency rating used for residential air-conditioning and heat-pump equipment. In general, a higher rating indicates greater cooling efficiency under the standardized test procedure, but efficiency rating is only one factor to consider when selecting a system.
